Peugeot dominated the early part of the season with its beastly 205 T16. Three wins in three rallies, one for Timo Salonen and two for Ari Vatanen. The Audi and Lancia cars were spectators to Peugeot's dominance. But for the lioness's first Safari, things were more complicated: Bruno Saby had an accident and Ari Vatanen had to retire with a mechanical failure. Fortunately, Timo Salonen was there to secure a 5th place, the 205 T16's best result at the Safari! The event was won by Juha Kankkunen, who would become a Peugeot driver the following season.
